  1. National Federation of the Blind (NFB) Braille Enrichment for Literacy and Learning (BELL) Academy of Iowa (new in 2016).
  2. Blindness Awareness month activities, such as teaching sessions in local schools, attendance at civic organization meetings and other community events, and newspaper articles.
  3. Expenses to allow our members to participate in Washington Seminar. An event each year that allows NFBI members to travel to Washington DC to speak with members of congress regarding laws that effect blind people.
  4. Coordination with the NFB to offer resources to blind adults and to blind children and their families.
  5. Contributions to Scholarships offered to blind students both in Iowa and nationally.

NFBI State Convention

It is time for the annual National Federation of the Blind of Iowa state convention to be held October 7-9, 2016 at the newly renovated Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites, Des Moines Northwest,

. This year’s convention will be packed with information and fun! We are so fortunate to have Dr. Fredric Schroeder, newly elected President of the World Blind Union serve as our national representative. Convention registration is $15 if you pre-register by September 19. Along with hearing great presentations on the World Blind Union, Non-24 disorder, and Disability Rights you will have an opportunity to participate in cardio drumming, Mindful Living, and learn how amateur radio operators work from IBARC. Registration forms are available at the end of this letter or online through www.eventbrite.com.

Room rates this year will be $91.84 per night for standard and king, $136.64 for Junior King Suite, and $159.04 for Executive King Suite. Rooms are available at these rates October 6-9, 2016.   1. Our statewide Diabetes Action Network will hold its annual meeting on Friday, October 7, 2016 at 1:00 PM in the Nebraska Room. Registration for this session will begin at 12:30 PM outside the room. This year the guest speaker will be Tom and Eileen Ley. Tom helped to develop the Dexcom G5 mobile app for iPhones. This app makes monitoring your glucose levels accessible to blind individuals. The dues for IDAN are $5 and can be paid at the door. The Diabetes Action Network meets by telephone on the first Saturday of each month at 1:00 PM People with diabetes, family and interested friends are welcome. Our meetings are designed to provide education, resources, and advocacy for blind and visually impaired diabetics.   2. The At Large Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of Iowa will hold its annual meeting at 3:00 PM on Friday, October 7, 2016 in the Wisconsin Room. This year there will be a speaker from the United Way who will talk about the 2-1-1 information service. Registration will be outside the room beginning at 2:30 PM. Dues for the At Large Chapter, which is comprised of people who live in areas where no NFBI chapter exists, are $5 and can be paid at the door. This chapter has been active for about 3 years and already has over 20 members who meet by telephone on the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM.   3. All are invited to a tasty pizza supper at 5:00 PM on Friday for only $12. The menu will include pizza, tossed salad, and soda. Your pre-registration will help us know how many pizzas to prepare. Pick up your tickets at Registration before 5:00 PM. Tickets for this event will be collected at the pizza supper.
  4. Convention registration will be open from 3:00 PM-8:00 PM on Friday, October 7 outside of Salon D and will resume Saturday, October 8, 8:00 AM-8:45 AM.
  5. The Resolutions Committee will present resolutions in the Wisconsin Room at 6:30 PM on Friday, October 7. Submit resolutions electronically to Cindy Ray at cindyray@gmail.com by October 1. You may also bring resolutions in final written form to the committee meeting.
  6. Come join us for hospitality from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM Friday night. This year we will have a “game night” and music provided by Rich Webb on the piano and DJ Sam Claassen. A cash bar will be open during this event.
  7. Our annual President's breakfast buffet will begin on Saturday morning at 7:00 AM in Salon B of the Ballroom. The cost for this event is $14. Be sure to pick up your tickets at registration the day before. The annual meeting of the NFBI Board of Directors will follow at 8:00 AM and it is open to all members.
  8. The Saturday luncheon will be different this year, it will start at 12 noon in Salon B of the Ballroom. After lunch starting at 12:45 PM you will have a choice of three separate activities. Darrel Kirby will be leading a class on “Mindful Living". In this class attendees will learn techniques and practices on how to mindfully live in the present. The Iowa Blind Amateur Radio Club will be holding their annual meeting, where attendees will have an opportunity to learn about the amateur radio business if you are interested, contact Bob Ray, President of IBARC. If you are tired of sitting and you need some pep in your step the members of the Courage League Sports are going to lead us in cardio drumming and other activities to get our blood pumping. This year a representative from the National Association of Blind Students Division will join us to discuss the possibility of developing a student’s division in Iowa. This is an informational meeting only. Lunch is a plated sit-down meal and cost $15.
  9. Our annual NFBI dinner banquet begins at 7:00 PM Saturday evening and promises to be a festive occasion. You won’t want to miss our own Terri Wilcox serve as the mistress of ceremonies. Dr. Fredric Schroeder, First Vice President of the World Blind Union will be the evening’s featured speaker. The cost for this meal is $30.
  10. Throughout our convention, April Enderton, Door Prize Chairperson extraordinaire, will draw names for fabulous door prizes. Help her by finding great door prizes and sending them to April Enderton,

Complete the preregistration form and send it with your check, made payable to the National Federation of the Blind of Iowa, to the address on the form no later than September 19, 2016 at 5:00 PM. Convention pre-registration price is $15.
